Depression in modern day Ireland… If you were to roam the streets of any major city throughout the world and ask the locals to sum up the Irish in a few, short sentences the chances are that terms like jolly, friendly, laidback and fun would surface on numerous occasions. Inevitably less flattering adjectives such as ginger, drunken and imbeciles would also be used but hey nobody’s perfect. All in all the general consensus would be that we’re a quite likeable bunch the presence of whom would be sure to enliven [...]

Robot Brains, Glowing Cats and Mind Movies, Oh My!
By Sinead Healy Have you ever watched Myth Busters or Brainiac: Science Abuse? They are TV programmes that try to make science fun by carrying out some intriguing experiments and blowing up as much stuff as possible. This is somewhat misleading since most labs try to avoid explosions. If you go into science expecting that, you may be disappointed. However, science is still cool! Here are three recent, exciting science experiments. Robot Brain. Not just a joke from the Simpsons anymore! Scientists in Tel Aviv University in Israel have inserted a robotic cerebellum [...]
What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?
Nearly two weeks ago, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the date for the upcoming referendum on the EU fiscal compact treaty. It’ll be May 31, a Thursday, always an inconvenient day for students. It’s fair to say that most of the talk around the referendum is like double-dutch to those of us without degrees in economics. So what exactly are we voting on next month? What is a ‘fiscal compact’? Good question. The fiscal compact is basically a name for the treaty which was signed by all EU nations apart [...]
USI Annual Congress: Day Three
Student representatives at the USI Annual Congress have voted in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement, to defer the vote on the Union’s policy on third level fees, and elected John Logue (UCDSU) as President Gary Redmond’s successor. Yesterday, students voted 126 to 34 in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement. The Agreement was introduced in 2010 and amongst its implications is that public servants shall suffer no further pay reductions until 2014. Because of this, up to 80% of third level funding is [...]
The Do’s and Don’ts on St Paddy’s Day
The beloved day of St Patrick is almost upon us and everyone here at Studenty would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy St Paddy’s Day. We have put together a little guide of do’s and don’ts while celebrating the festivities over the weekend. Some of the do’s and don’ts may seem pretty obvious to people who have woken up the day after Paddy’s Day with all their body hair still intact. Meanwhile those of you who have arisen from your drunken slumber on the [...]
Jezebel Dolan Predicts: Maniacal Chortles for Taurus
Aries (21 March – 19 April) As chairman of the “Salt of the Earth” Appreciation Society, you have reduced Ireland to a map of the Greater Dublin Area in the minds of many…too many. Taurus (20 April – 20 May) As treasurer of the “Spectre Hunter” Ghost Hunting Society, you will acquire a haunted face from the fairies on an excursion to some ruin or other this week. Having disturbed the magicked topsoil with your equipment, your vacuous chasm of a mouth will be cursed to play host to a sprite named O’ Meara. His [...]

National Enquirer Prints Photo of Whitney Houston in Coffin
Fans were left reeling after seeing an image on the front page of the National Enquirer which showed Whitney Houston in her coffin at her open-casket funeral service held last week. The image, which came from an unknown source, showed the singer laying in the coffin, in a purple dress. The caption of the photo read, “Whitney: The Last Photo!” Her fans’ horror is clearly visible on social networking sites such as Twitter. “It really made me upset that they have pictures of Whitney in the coffin all over. Like really?” @lesbihonest [...]
